Minimum unit pricing of alcohol

Purpose

This joint consultation with the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety seeks views on the setting of a minimum price per unit of alcohol to tackle problems associated with the availability of cheap alcohol in Northern Ireland.  Views are also sought on other possible alternatives to minimum unit pricing, including below-cost selling and VAT and duty increases.  The consultation also seeks views on the introduction of a social responsibility levy.  If the consultation endorses the proposals for minimum pricing as laid out in this paper, it is intended that legislation would then be brought forward.
We are keen to hear from everyone including consumers of alcohol, trade associations, criminal justice and health workers or those who run or work in pubs, registered clubs, supermarkets or other outlets selling alcohol.
