Voluntary deductions from earnings

Voluntary deductions from earnings
A non-resident parent may request that child maintenance is paid directly from their earnings. We call these arrangements voluntary deductions from earnings arrangements. They operate in the same way as other voluntary deductions such as union subscriptions and loan repayments.
  • There is no protected earnings rate or proportion. You simply deduct the amount stated for each pay period meaning there is no minimum amount that your employee must be left with
  • There is no requirement to carry forward any shortfalls from preceding pay periods
  • The arrangement is voluntary so you have no legal obligation to make the deductions as requested. However, collecting payments in this way may prevent the need for us to impose a compulsory deduction from earnings order in the future
  • You are entitled to make an adminstrative charge but this should be negotiated with your employee

We will be adding more information about how a voluntary deduction of earnings should be implemented very shortly.
