Voluntary payments
A non- resident parent usually has to pay child maintenance from the date that we first contact them.In most cases we ring the non- resident parent, but if this is not possible, we write to them . We may not be able to work out the child maintenance straight away. A non- resident parent may want to start paying child maintenance as soon as possible to support the children. They can make payments until we work out the correct amount of child maintenance. We call these voluntary payments.
Voluntary payments will help a non- resident parent to avoid arrears building up. A person with care and a non- resident parent can ask us to collect and pass on voluntary payments.
The non- resident parent may pay voluntary payments straight to the person with care. If this happens, both of them should keep a record and proof of all payments they make or receive.Voluntary payments might include:
- payments instead of child maintenance, paid to the person with care;or
- payments for certain expenses for the home of the qualifying children.
