South West Quarter Regeneration Draft Masterplan

South West Quarter Regeneration Draft Masterplan
Margaret Ritchie has unveiled a master plan for the development of the South West Quarter of Belfast City Centre. Westside will help bridge west Belfast with the main shopping area and central business district. As well as the obvious need for a major overhaul, the plan also includes a new street between Fountain Lane and Chapel Lane, linking Donegal Place with Castlecourt. A new city centre square, ‘Fountain Square’ is also being proposed.

Thi spicture is taken at about 25 degree angle. It shows the junction of Berry Street and Chapel Lane from the Berry Street end. The black security gates of Castle Court, a grey haired man crosses the street wearing light coloured jacket and denims. To the right of the picture is a cream and brick coloured building and the junction of Chapel Lane.

New Street planned in the Masterplan will link Castle Court to Donegall Place
The exact area covered by the Masterplan can be detailed as follows. From the corner of Wellington Place at its junction with College Square East, following a line along Wellington Place into Donegall Square North, turning left along Donegal Place up to BankStreet (that’s the little street that runs parallel to Castle Street), just after Primark, continue along Bank Street to Chapel Lane, then turns right towards Castle Court and Berry Street. At Berry Street it turns left, then left again at King Street. At the traffic lights it turns right with an immediate left running back to the black Man.

For decades much of this area has remained relatively unchanged. This will now dramatically change, although much of the history and familiarity of the area will be kept.  And West Belfast will be reconnected with the City Centre. Millfield Junction, for example, has grown wider over time, alienating local residents of the Falls from the retail therapy that lies within walking distance. Significantly as well, £5 million will be spent on regenerating Bank Square, giving a major boost to the area around the historic Kelly’s cellars.

Belfast is certainly striding confidently from the shadows of its sectarian past towards a vibrant future. Our own Westside story will build on Castle Court, Custom House Square and Victorian Square, rocketing us up the league of Europe’s leading cities.
