Medical Expenses Incurred in the European Community (EC)

Summary

A valid EHIC (formerly E111) covers the costs of medical expenses when visiting any EC country.

Who is entitled?

European Community (EC) Nationals, Nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and stateless persons or refugees who reside permanently in the UK can obtain medical treatment while on temporary visits to other EEA countries only. The EEA applies to all EC countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Treatment is provided on the same basis as a resident of the country they are visiting.
The cost of repatriation from anywhere in the world is not covered under any legislation, and must remain the responsibility of the customer (or their insurance company).

How to claim

Claims can be made via post, telephone or the Internet.
Application forms are available at the Post Office.
