Community Care Grant

Summary

Community Care Grants are non repayable payments for essential items. You do not have to pay National Insurance contributions to qualify.

Who is eligible?

You must be:
Payments are discretionary.
Grants are intended to promote Community Care by:
  • helping you re-establish yourself in the community following institutional or residential care;
  • helping you remain in the community rather than enter care;
  • easing exceptional pressure on families;
  • helping you set up home as a planned programme of resettlement;
  • helping with the expense of caring for prisoners and young offenders on home leave, and
  • helping with some travelling expenses.
Some items are excluded.
The Decision Maker considers the merits of each application, taking into account the nature, extent and urgency of the need. Grants are budget limited.

How to apply

You should complete form SF300 available from your local Social Security or Jobs & Benefits office.

How is it paid?

Community Care Grants for travel expenses may be payable in instalments.
If you have been awarded or refused a payment for an item or service within the last 26 weeks you cannot get a payment for the same item or service within 26 weeks of your first application unless there has been a relevant change of circumstances.

Award

The minimum amount is £30, unless the application is for travelling expenses or living expenses.
The amount considered is the appropriate cost of the item(s) requested.
Any awards are reduced by capital over £500 (£1000 age 60 or over).
There is a review system.
