16/17 Year Olds - Income Support

Some young people could receive Income Support if, for one of the following reasons, they are not required to be available for work or are unable to take up a Youth Training place:
  • they are incapable of work;
  • they are pregnant and within 11 weeks of their expected week of confinement and up to fifteen weeks after, or incapable of work because of pregnancy;
  • they are a carer;
  • they are a lone parent;
  • they are registered blind;
  • they are single looking after foster children;
  • they are refugees attending a course to learn English for more than 15 hours a week and when the course started had been in the country for less than 12 months;
  • they are temporarily looking after another person;
  • they are disabled students;
  • they are persons from abroad who satisfy the conditions for an urgent case payment;
  • they are a member of a couple looking after a child while the partner is temporarily abroad;
  • they are required to attend court;
  • they are in receipt of certain training allowances (Youth Training and Modern Apprenticeships);
  • they are affected by a trade dispute;
  • they are appealing against a decision that they are not incapable of work;
  • deaf students.
  • Young people in relevant education who are:
  • parents;
  • severely handicapped;
  • orphaned;
  • living away from parents or anyone acting in place of parents in certain circumstances,
they can claim Jobseeker's Allowance if they choose to, providing they can satisfy the entitlement conditions.
