If you are aged 5 or over and under 65, and have difficulty walking or need help getting around
Paid at different rates
Have you:
- Needed help for three months and are likely to need it for at least another six months?
If YES, claim Disability Living Allowance.
There are special rules for people with a terminal illness to help them get benefit quickly and easily.
You may not get Disability Living Allowance if you are in hospital, a care home or somewhere similar.
Disability Living Allowance is not affected by savings.
Disability Living Allowance is not usually affected by other money you have coming in.
Disability Living Allowance for children under age 16
You can claim Disability Living Allowance for a child with a physical or mental illness or disability.
If they need more help or looking after than other children of the same age because of their illness or disability
Is the child:
- Aged 3 months or over and generally needs extra help or looking after?
- Aged 3 years or over and;
cannot walk at all? had both legs amputated above the ankle or at the ankle, or was born without both legs and feet? is both deaf and blind and needs someone with them when they are out of doors? is severely mentally impaired with severe behavioural problems and already qualifies for the highest rate of the care component of Disability Living Allowance because they need personal care both day and night?
- Aged 5 years or over and has difficulty walking or needs extra help getting around?
If YES to one, claim Disability Living Allowance.
How to Claim
When to claim Claim straight away. If you delay you may lose benefit.
Claim Form Contact the Disability and Carers Service on (028) 9090 6182 or your Social Security or Jobs & Benefits office for a claim form. For your nearest Social Security or Jobs & Benefits office, look for the Social Security Agency display advert in the business numbers section of the phone book.
Filling in the form Before you fill in your form, check that you are applying for everything you may be entitled to.
Proof of identity It is important that we can be sure of your identity when you make a claim. We may need to ask you about your background and look at any official documents you have to support the information you give. This could be your original birth certificate, passport or other documents. You may need more than one.
