Students - Income Support

Income Support rules on education and training

Full-time students

Normally if a customer is a full-time student they cannot claim Income Support. There are some exceptions to this and if the customer satisfies one of the following criteria they may claim Income Support:
  • they are a lone parent and are responsible for a child under 16 who is a member of their household; or
  • they are a lone foster-parent and are responsible for a child under 16; or
  • they are a disabled student; or
  • they are a deaf student; or
  • they are a person who has been granted refugee status, who is learning English and on the date the course commenced has been in the United Kingdom for no more than twelve months; or
  • they are a person from abroad whose funds from abroad have been temporarily disrupted; or
  • their partner is also a full time student and one of them is treated as responsible for a child or young person. The claimant is then eligible during the summer vacation if they are a prescribed category of person.

Open University courses

If a customer is taking an Open University course they will be able to attend a residential course, which is a requirement of the course, for one week per course and continue to get Income Support.
The student's income will be taken into consideration when assessing a claim to Income
