What is the New Deal for people aged 25+?
The New Deal for 25+ is a programme which aims to help jobseekers who have been unemployed and claiming Jobseeker's Allowance for 18 months or more to find employment. It aims to enhance the job prospects of the most disadvantaged, particularly those with basic skills needs through the provision of high quality work, education and training.
To be eligible for New Deal for 25+ you should have been :
- In receipt of Jobseeker's Allowance continuously for 18 months or more; or
- In receipt of Jobseeker's Allowance for 18 months out of the last 21 months.
- In receipt of Pension Credit for 18 months or more and not working or working less than 16 hours per week. The qualifying period of 18 months may consist of a combination of JSA and Pension Credit or Pension Credit only.
There will be earlier entry for special groups.
What does the New Deal consist of?
There will be a Gateway period with a maximum duration of 16 weeks. Participation will be mandatory.
After the Gateway period people aged 25 to 49 will be required to participate in a Preparation for Employment Programme which can last up to 26 weeks.
Those aged 50 and over can choose to participate in the preparation for employment programme.
During the Preparation for Employment Programme a training allowance will be paid at your benefit rate plus £15.38 per week.
The Preparation for Employment Programme is a full time programme of work experience, guidance, training and job search. It will consist of a mandatory period of activity, which can include an education and training opportunity and self-employed Test Trading.
