Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

The Welfare Reform Act (Northern Ireland) 2007 was introduced into law on 29th June 2007 after completing its passage through The Northern Ireland Assembly, allowing for the introduction of Employment and Support Allowance from October 2008.
Employment and Support Allowance is one of a number of measures being introduced in a bid to address poverty and social exclusion across the UK. It will provide a gateway to employment – assessing a customer’s capacity for work, not just entitlement to benefit – while ensuring that those who are unable to work receive adequate support.
“Work for those who can; improved support for those who can’t.”
