What is a Crisis Loan?
A Crisis Loan is there to help you in an emergency or as a consequence of a disaster. It is interest-free and you don't need to be in receipt of benefits to qualify.
How do I get a Crisis Loan?
To get a Crisis Loan you must be aged 16 or over and:
- unable to pay for basic living costs which could result in a serious risk to the health and safety of you or your family
- unable to pay for something else. The lack of which may pose a serious threat to the health and safety of your family
- been awarded a Community Care Grant because you are leaving institutional or residential care and require rent in advance
What do I do next?
If the answer is yes to one of the above and you cannot get help in any other way, ring the Crisis Loan Claim Line.
- Whether you can get a Crisis Loan will depend on your circumstances
- Any savings you have may affect how much you get
- If you have already borrowed from the Social Fund and you still owe money, it may affect how much you can get
- Before you can get money you will have to agree how you will pay the loan back
How to apply
To make a claim, ring the Crisis Loan Claim Line Freephone number above. A Social Fund officer will process your claim over the telephone.
The Social Fund officer considers each application on its merits, taking account of all the circumstances of the need. The maximum overall loan limit is £1000 less any outstanding Social Fund loans.
If your application is successful, arrangements will normally be made for collection of your Cheque Payment at your local office.
