River Lagan and Weir

Aerial photograph of the River Lagan, showing it meandering through the city of Belfast.  The new developments reach right to the rivers edge. The Department for Social Development is now responsible for the impounded River Lagan and Weir.
We are committed to continuing the transformation of this stretch of River.
Salmon and seals now swim in the river and residents and businesses flock to purchase prestigious developments along its banks.

The Lagan Weir

The Lagan Weir, completed in 1994 is a dynamic structure with five flap gates, each operated by a large hydraulic ram, which controls the water levels upstream to Stranmillis weir, a distance of 4.8km.
These gates can be operated to permit boats across the weir into the upper stretches of the river.

River business

The river is primarily used by rowers from the private boats clubs. The Lagan Watersports Centre also runs sailing and canoeing on the river.
A commercial river boat operates from the weir on a daily basis and provides tours upstream and downstream around the titanic quarter.
Speed boats, jet skis and water skiers are not allowed on the river except during an event which has been approved by the Department for Social Development.
