This piece was produced as part of a two week Art and Industry Workshop, organised by Arklow Engineering in Co. Wicklow. At the time of making ‘Greenland’ Bob Sloan was not aware of his source but later realised his inspiration came from a very large Chestnut tree beside his studio.

Three stainless steel weights on a bed of tiles, which include reflective text. The piece was designed and made by Mike Hogg in consultation with the Markets Development Association to recall a time when the markets contributed greatly to Belfast’s economy.

The Irish design depicts the many winding roads in Ireland with the imprint of cycle tyres along the lanes. The Milepost Series have been designed to be both visually stimulating and give basic NCN route information.

Completed to mark the launch of the National Cycle Network, Millennium Routes, the piece comprises two large curved blue steel elements with portholes, referring to Belfast shipbuilding. The bronze disc set at the centre of the piece was designed in conjunction with the Bridge Community Youth Group on the Ravenhill Road.

Artist Mike Hogg worked with Mornington Enterprises to create this artwork. The artwork is based on the historic theme of glass/bottling works. It represents an historic bottle top.

The bronze disc contains an historic map of the Gasworks site showing Cromac Wood, which predates the Gasworks. The disc was commissioned as part of the development of infrastructure on the Gasworks site.

The sculpted brickwork depicts images of the wildlife, which once roamed Cromac Wood the location of what is now the Gasworks.

The railings wave around the site entrance inviting people to walk to the river.

The columns represent Belfast past and future. The past column depicts the old industries of linen manufacture, shipbuilding and ropemaking and the future column displays the new technologies of computers, transportation and communication.
Location: St John Vianney Youth Club, River Terrace. Title: The Millennium Garden 2000 Artist: Alan Dawson Associates / Clare McComish Ceramics and St. John Vianney Youth Group Material: Railings & Mosaic Funding: Laganside, Sustrans.
This work was carried out in conjunction with St John Vianney Youth Club and comprises unique railings and a mosaic panel in the centre of the garden area. The ornamental gates depict two mirroring swans and are located beside the pathway at St. John Vianney. The mosaic panel of the Children of Lir was designed and constructed with the aid of the youth from the community centre.

This mosaic depicts past and present uses of the river Lagan within a fish shaped design and was created in conjunction with Lower Ormeau Road Action Group and VSB ‘Wheelworks’ in the Spring of 1999.

A series of 18 concrete tiles set in the walls of the underpass. The tiles refer to modes of transport along the river corridor.

An aluminium hull-like seat feature, the form of which echoes the shape of a ship as well as more organic shell-like forms. The artwork also serves as a public seat adjacent to the riverside pathway beside the pontoon at Governor’s Bridge.
