Making Belfast Work
The Making Belfast Work (MBW) initiative was launched in July 1988 to address the economic, educational, social, health and environmental problems facing people living in the most disadvantaged areas of Belfast. Its purpose is to strengthen and focus the efforts being made by the community, the private sector and the Government.
The introduction of the initiative was a Government response to acute, deep-rooted deprivation in a significant number of electoral wards in Belfast. The initiative identified 32 wards classed as deprived on the basis of a study of deprivation in Northern Ireland.
To date £275m has been allocated, supporting over 350 projects. This is additional to the extensive resources available through the mainstream programmes of Departments and public bodies. The initiative is delivered by Government Departments working in conjunction with appropriate public bodies, voluntary agencies and community groups.
