EU Verification Unit

About the Unit

The EU Verification Unit was established in 1999 to ensure Departmental compliance with the Regulatory Requirements of administering European Funding. Under Peace 1 this was done through Commission Regulation No 2064/97.
The Verification Unit provides an independent audit and verification of a minimum of 5% of the total European expenditure which the Department administers based on Commission Regulation No 438/2001. This is achieved by conducting a programme of independent on-the-spot verification visits or control examinations to projects in receipt of European funding.
For the purposes of financial management and control, European Funding is treated in the same manner as domestic funding; therefore the Unit also ensures that Government Accounting NI(GANI) and DSD accounting procedures are adhered to as well as the applicable National and European Regulations.
The Verification Unit is independent and has no direct involvement with those functions within the Department associated with administering grant aid.
